Every year I learn something new about how to better navigate Denver Comic Con. Here is my list of the top seven things I learned this year.
- Stay Close – If you have the luxury or staying in a hotel for DCC, make your reservation soon so you can stay at a hotel close to the con. Then if you need a break, change of clothes, or food, you are just a quick walk away.
- Be Late, Then Early – Getting to the con late was actually a blessing, it made lines getting inside non-existent and non stressful. However, once inside the con, if you want to go to any panel, be early or you won’t get a seat.
- Shop Before You Go – Carrying aroudn prints you don’t want crumpled or heavy knick knacks is no fun, so do your purchasing right before you leave. This might mean writing down or taking cell phone photos of booth numbers you want to go back to. Just don’t try to remember where you want to go back because it all starts to look the same.
- Expect The Unexpected – DCC takes feedback and changes. Sometimes that means mid-con and sometimes that means year to year, but don’t expect things to run like they did last year. I don’t think we have been to DCC where the layout has been the same. Mostly, this is a good thing, but just don’t get used to anything.
- Plan To Rest – Pretty much every person I ran across on Sunday was commenting that they were exhausted but didn’t want the con to end. Don’t Con until you drop, schedule some times to sit and rest, especially if you are conning with small children. That way you might make it to the end of the con.
- Keep it Separated – If attending with lots of friends, plan meet up spots ahead of time. It is nearly impossible to keep with a group while wandering through the venders. It is far better to do that with a smaller group or alone. Then, plan to meet up at a panel or lunch later. Planning is key because cell phone reliability can be spotty.
- Dress for Success – If cosplaying, realize that it is hot in June. Either start liking fandoms with breathable fabrics or modify cosplays to stay cool. You might want to drink more water than usual and take frequent breaks.
Even though I learn something new every year, I still sometimes forget what I learned in previous years. In writing this blog, I remembered that last year I learned to bring games for waiting in lines. Totally forgot those this year. I need to remember to review my blogs prior to each con.
