Fall is upon us, and that means a few things: Leaves are changing, school is back in session, Halloween is coming, and pumpkin flavor gets put in EVERYTHING. We decided to make our ‘Basic Training’ pumpkin taste test an annual tradition.
This year we had pumpkin spice flavored; Twinkies, caramel corn, oatmeal, scones, pie, cookie straws, Noosa yogurt, wafers, granola bars, Frosted Flakes, English muffins, chocolate-covered almonds, and marshmallows. Plus we got a bonus of some homemade pumpkin-habanero hot sauce that our friend Paul at Matador Mexican Grill whipped up. (That happens around 12:47 in the video.)
Why did we call it “Basic Training?” Well, the top definition of basic on Urban dictionary is;
“Only interested in things mainstream, popular, and trending
Omg BAE is so basic. all she wants to do is drink pumpkin spice lattes and play candy crush.”You can read all about the delicious irony of commercializing a food that succeeded specifically because it seemed to represent an alternative to a life of commerce fromTime. According toWikipedia, the Pumpkin Spice Latte has only been around since 2003. It’s hard to believe that one lowly Starbucks beverage helped spawn a cultural movement of flavoring everything (both edible and inedible) with pumpkin.Here is the video from last year that got this whole thing started.
