‘IT’ Brief Movie Review

This past weekend the highly anticipated remake of ‘IT’ hit the theaters and my fiance and I put on our big kid pants to brave the terror.

OK, to be quite honest, horror movies don’t really get to me. I don’t jump, don’t get scared or anything like that. There were two main reasons that I wanted to see this movie.

One, I was curious to see how they chose to tackle the story and handle the remake from the mini series that was made for network television.

Two, and the main reason I wanted to see ‘IT’ was because my fiance is a scaredy cat when it comes to any type of horror movies. Call me mean, but she agreed to go!

Let’s get into the film itself. I rather enjoyed it. I haven’t seen the original mini series and I have only really read about 2 chapters of the book, I feel like they did a good enough job to honor the source material. The story was well paced, didn’t feel rushed or drawn out and the character development was fantastic. I feel like the kids that were chosen for the roles did a great job. Huge highlight to Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things) in this film. His role as Richie was great. The film did a good job spreading the focus around to the kids and what their fears are and how they overcome them. deep down, that is what ‘IT’ is truly about I feel. Overcoming trauma. Yes, there is a demon messing with them causing traumatic things but it feeds of their fear and exploits it. The kids must stick together and conquer that fear to combat Pennywise. Also, I feel as if Bill Skarsgard did a great job as Pennywise. Creepy and terrifying.

If you are expecting a “scare the crap out of you” film, you might be let down. Unless you are deathly afraid of clowns. Overall, I would say that ‘IT’ is more of a thriller than straight up horror. Take it from my fiance, who hates horror movies because she scares easy, and I quote, “That wasn’t as scary as I thought it was going to be.”​

Only real complaint was the movie start time was 9:15 and the film itself didn’t start until 9:40. I love previews but I don’t need that many of them.

If you read the book or watched the mini series then you know the story has two parts. And just like the book and mini series, the film is going to have two parts, which I think is a great idea to properly give the source material its proper film. The second part which is going to focus on the kids, now adults, facing off against Pennywise once again.
