This game came about a month ago and I was finally able to get around to playing it. It’s a survival horror rpg based around the short story from H.P. Lovecraft and the game from 1981 by the same name. You play as Edward Pierce, a struggling detective that is called to an old whaling island to investigate a mysterious death. That’s when things get weird.
The story is by far the best part of the game. You are asked to investigate the death of an artist on the secluded island of Darkwater. Once you are there, you learn the history of the whaling island and the family that had the tragic death. While snooping about, you uncover that there is more than meets the eye with this island as you stumble across a cult that is calling to a dark master.
It is interesting and does a decent job, for the most part, keeping you enthralled in the mystery of the island. I say “for the most part” because at times it does stall a little bit and some of the investigation questions are repetitive. The voice acting is ok, but what takes you out of the game is the character models. They are clunky and very stiff. When you are asking questions, they flail their arms around comically making it seem like you are talking to Zoltar.
The game has a few other problems as well including extremely long loading screens, some clunky mechanics and graphics that kind of seem last gen. It also boasts survival horror, but there is not a lot of horror and it basically holds your hand through the survival aspect.
The positives of the game like I mentioned, the voice acting for the most part, the story and the atmoshpere. It also has some replayability as it has a few different endings.
Overall I would say, if this sounds interesting, rent it or wait till it is on sale because I don’t think it is worth the $59.99 price.
I give it 3 out of 5 controllers.
