motherBy now you may have seen some reviews for the new Darren Aronofsky film, ‘Mother!’. They are not kind. While I can understand some of them, I don’t believe they are giving the movie a fair review.
Here is why I feel like it is getting bad reviews. As you watch the trailer, it seems this film is going to be a great horror movie with twists and turns. If you go into the movie thinking it is going to be a scary film or basing it off the trailer, you are going to be very disappointed.  The movie starts of as the movie from the trailer and then turns into something a little bit different and because of that drastic switch, I can see people leaving the theater unhappy.

Maybe saying “a bit different” isn’t the right words, but during the final act of the film I did have a confused look on my face and asked myself what I was watching numerous times. The truth about this film is, it is a thinking movie. This film was made in a way for you to question what you were watching, why you were watching it and what the hell is going on.  I left the theater not really understanding what just happened, but thinking about what the film meant and why what happened, happened.

In true Aronofsky fashion, the film has some odd moments, cringe worthy moments and possibly a couple that might shake you. Its visually a well done movie with the entire film happening in the house and the sound design and set design is fantastic. The filming, blocking and editing are well done as well and they way the camera was shot during all of Jennifer Lawrence’s parts helped you feel certain parts. The acting was also well done and at parts I felt frustration and anger towards the guest and sympathy for J-Law’s character.

Now on to the actual story. To be honest, I don’t really want to give it away. I am sure you can google it if you want but I would recommend that if you want to see this, don’t really google the plot.

Here is what you can do to make sure you enjoy the film somewhat. Go into this film knowing that it is not going to be what you are expecting. Be prepared to leave the theater possibly confused and wondering what you just witnessed. Be in the mood for a movie that is going to mess with your mind and make you think and then mess with your mind again. And remember, it is not a horror movie. Follow those steps and you may appreciate the film for what it is. The way it was to be intended.

Would I watch it again? Maybe just once more knowing what I know now about the ending.
