Nintendo, Please Get it Together

After trying to get a SNES classic today and watching the frustration on my co-workers face while he was doing the same, I came to the realization that Nintendo likes toying with our childhoods. They released the ever coveted NES Classic last year, and they just recently launched the hot item of the SNES Classic. Both of which are extremely hard to get.  While I think this is great that they are letting us relive our youth, I don’t agree with how they are handling it.

I like this because it is introducing a new generation to classic games because Nintendo knows the people that grew up with these consoles have kids now and what better way to bond than saving the Mushroom Kingdom or Hyrule together.  I don’t like it because in doing this, they are also taking advantage of that nostalgia and the people that help make them who they are today.

I say “take advantage” because they are only releasing very little which, in doing so, is giving power to second hand sellers on eBay and what not. The person knows that it is a highly popular item, buys it for about $90 bucks or so after tax and then sells it on eBay for double what they paid.  I get it, supply and demand and what not, but in doing so, I feel like Nintendo is missing a great opportunity.  I know they are not really hurting for money, but with releasing so little while so many want them, they are missing out on a profit.

Another way they are missing out is not allowing these mini consoles to download additional games. can you imagine if they opened up the digital Nintendo store and you could download your favorite SNES or NES game to it? It would be great! I know what you are thinking,  “but you can access that and download retro games on the Wii U!” True, but you would have to drop $200 for the console and you also wouldn’t be playing it on a “classic” controller. If you really wanted to, you could do what I did a few years back and hit up flea markets to find the original consoles. But, with the huge rise in the nostalgia market, the price of retro games has went up substantially.  I think because of the reason the Switch doesn’t have a digital market to download the old games like you can on the Wii U is because of these classic consoles.

I guess what I am getting at is, Nintendo, stop playing with us and just make the consoles available for all. Don’t screw with our childhood like Michael Bay did. Also, should we be expecting a Nintendo 64 classic next year?
