Sinister Treats Spicy Chocolate Taste Test [VIDEO]

At Fort Collins Comic Con we bought some spicy chocolate created by Sinister Treats, a spicy confection connection. Their product comes with a warning from WebMD information about capsaicin that warns pregnant and breastfeeding women not to eat and talks about side effects like sweating, flushing, and runny nose.  Still, the crew at Sinister Treats were so Geekish about spicy chocolate, that it really made me want to try.  Well, truthfully, it made me want Derek and Beano to try and me to watch, but that’s not quite how it went down.

First up was the “Haunted Herbs” which is a green chili and almond chocolate. It was quite yummy with a touch of heat in the aftertaste.

Next was the “Witch’s Revenge, “ made with habanero pepper and habanero sugar. This witch definitely had her revenge in the form of a burning mouth.

Then we braved “Glowing Skull,” a mix of ghost pepper and orange zest. This one was reminiscent of a tootsie roll that rolled out some serious heat after lulling you into a false sense of chocolaty security.

After that, we consumed the “Screeching Owl, “ which mixed scorpion pepper and caramel sugar. This white chocolate delight was buttery, melty, and delightful. Alas, like a ghost, it snuck up on us and the pepper part was a sharp shock of heat.

Last on the spicy scale was the “Graveyard Bones,” that combined reaper peppers with rice crispies. This chocolate had a nice crunchy start (Crunch Bar-ish), but then ended with a body heat-raising eruption of spice.

We ended our chocolate tasting with a “Raspberry Sugar Square.” This was my favorite one of the bunch since spicy isn’t my favorite. The chocolate was smooth, had a natural raspberry flavor, and was a welcome rest to the spice. Since my mouth was still on fire from the rest of the chocolate, this one still tasted spicy even though it wasn’t.

I learned a lot from this taste test: Sinister Treats does good work, sugar and milk mixed together helps put out a burning mouth, and If you like spicy, you will LOVE this chocolate.  It doesn’t sacrifice taste just to add spice. This is quality chocolate with great taste that has a spicy aftertaste. I would love for Sinister Treats to make some non-spicy versions of these chocolates too.

Find out more about Sinister Treats on their Facebook page.

Side note: We also tested one of Sinister Treat’s experimental hard candies. It was all the peppers mixed together, and it was exactly what that sounds like…painful. Again, like the chocolate, it tasted great but then felt like it was burning a hole in my tongue. You can watch our Facebook live of this below.
